April– April is an exciting month, the weather is getting warmer and the ground is thawing. The smell of fresh dirt is in the air! We are working the ground which usually means finishing the mulching we didn’t get done in the fall. Towards the end of this month, we are planting potatoes in the ground as well as onions and sugar beets.

We will have some calves running around and the piglets are hopefully making their appearance. The geese are looking for a good place to make a nest and everything is new and exciting!!

There are some not so pleasant jobs that April brings however, time to muck out all the animals coops and pens, spread the manure on the hay field, and give the animals some much needed clean bedding.

May– May is a BUSY month!!!!! All the seeds you have been caring for and nurturing over the last 2 or 3 months are getting put in the ground!! Asparagus is coming up, and the rhubarb is ready to cut.

All the little animals are frolicking everywhere. We are hoping to have the cows out in the freshly green pastures if we can get our fence up this year. The ducks have found the pond again and the eggs and milk are coming in daily.

June– The first berries are ripening!!! Strawberries, raspberries, and soon to be honeyberries are ripe and ready to pick this month!! The first green beans may be ready as well.

Egg production is high, and there is a surplus in the kitchen. Milk is coming in each morning, and the first herbs are drying.

This is one of my favorites to use for the weed barrier under the mulch. It is biodegradable and will help with soil health as it does not smother the soil nor does it potentially leave any microplastics behind as other weed barriers are suspected of doing.
