Have you ever heard of or thought about trying or making flavored vanilla extract?
What is flavored vanilla??
It is vanilla extract that you add other flavors to. For instance, Cinnamon vanilla or Orange vanilla.
How do you use it??
Just like normal vanilla extract!! I will note, that they don’t make a big impression in things such as cookies, but they shine in homemade whipped cream, ice cream, custard, and eggnog. They flavor coffee and coffee creamers, and flavor soda pop excellently as well. I really enjoy making a quick milknog and adding these flavorings to it. My husband is a big fan of adding them to his occasional iced coffee.
You do have to be careful not to over soak these flavorings as they can become bitter really quickly. Down below is the kind of flavored vanilla extracts I make. I have tried making cherry vanilla and blueberry vanilla before, but I found them to be lack luster and not very appealing. I use dried spices to extend the shelf life of these extracts. If you try fruit, I would recommend using dried fruit. If you use fresh, you are adding moisture into the extract which can cause mold. Some people have good luck with fresh fruit, but I personally have never tried it so I cannot recommend it.
It is best to store these in amber glass jars. I often soak these in regular canning jars and keep them in a dark cabinet. When they are done, I transfer them to amber glass jars.
